Exuma has three major areas....Great Exuma, Little Exuma, and Exuma Cays. It is located 35
miles Southeast of Nassau. It is approximately 112 Square miles in size. If you know about
the Fyre Festival fiasco, this is the island that it was to be held on. This island is all about the
water so stay where you have a view, get out on it, and play in it!
This was a family vacation and it was a crowd pleaser. We tried to see and do all that this
island had to offer. It is a bit rustic but I kind of liked that. We were there for the water anyway!
It will blow you away. It is all colors of blue, crystal clear, and just a big giant swimming pool.
The only other place that I’ve truly seen water like this is in the Turks and Caicos.
When you arrive by plane, probably a small one, you’ll land at the Georgetown airport (GGT). It
is just a small building. You will need a car here. Walk across the street and grab your car,
unless you have arranged transportation included with a house rental.
We stayed here: Hideaways ExumaWhat I liked about The Hideaway is that is is about in the middle of the island and close to the
Georgetown downtown area. They have two bedroom cottages, with kitchenettes, that are
perfect for families. There is also a restaurant on property, Splash Beach Bar and Grill, that
has great food and drinks.
The Georgetown Downtown area is so charming. Walk around and stop in to all of the places.
They have a local shopping market with arts and crafts. You will, most likely, see women
weaving baskets, and selling their creations. Great spot for souvenir shopping. Check out The
Peace and Plenty for the cutest resort and grab a drink at their adorable bar. Minn’s Water
Sports is also in this area for boat rentals. You will definitely want to drive your own boat and
spend a day exploring Elizabeth harbor.
Going South, you will cross a bridge over to LIttle Exuma. There are two beaches that are
definitely worth spending some time. Tropic of Cancer beach and Forbes Hill beach. Head
further South and this is where you will find Mom’s bakery. She is famous for her Rum Cake.
Santiago’s restaurant, fun place to sit and have lunch or dinner. It’s all outside, right on the
water, with the most amazing view.
